Winter 07 Bickerstaffe Record

Campaign updates – gas and broadband

(This is the article printed in the Winter ‘07 Bickerstaffe Record. Comments are welcome)

We reported in the last Bickerstaffe Record on our continuing efforts around the provision of a long term gas supply to the Barrow Nook area, and possibly others in Bickerstaffe. Following intervention from our MP, Fulcrum Connections have finally agreed to provide a quotation and details of how such a supply might be installed. Affordability remains to be seen, but we await their findings with interest.

We also reported on our continuing efforts to bring broadband to ALL residents in the Bickerstaffe area. Through local lobbying by residents, some success has been achieved in bringing broadband to an area of Barrow Nook where unsuitable aluminum wiring installed in initially means that the conductivity required for broadband is sometimes missing. Well done to those residents.

In addition, our MP has written formally to the ‘Local Telecoms Advisory Committee’, responsible for such matters (no, we’d never heard of it either!), to seek an overall response to a problem where some rural residents are being penalized for decisions about cheap phone wiring many years ago but which no-one in the new fragmented delivery network is willing to sort out.
