Female circumcision, professional ignorance

09.24.09 | 2 Comments

I went to the first part of my stage 2 Safeguarding Children training last night, in my position as Designated Child Protection Office for Bickerstaffe Children’s Services.

As far as I could work out, I was the only person in a room of around 20 childcare practitioners (other than the trainer) who knew that female circumcision is illegal in this country.  A number of my colleagues, all of whom have managerial/supervisory roles, marked on the exercise sheet that to arrange for a father to arrange for an 8 year old girl to be circumcised was ‘reasonable parenting’.

(There may have been others in other groups who knew, and apologies to them if they did, but I didn’t hear anyone say so.)

I know it was a training session, and that this morning everyone in the room knows it’s illegal.

You know, I was actually quite shocked.
