The Bickerstaffe Record

Being Labour, Cotterill on the Council

Questions unanswered

My colleague Chris Mawdsley asked a couple of formal questions at full council last week relating to what money had been spent on the clock tower and on Coronation Park in Ormskirk over the last few years, and where the money had come from.

This is standard stuff, and the questions were submitted for consideration and response a week before council, thereby duly fulfilling constitutional requirements.

We were somewhat surprised therefore, when the leader of the council replied simply that’d he’d answer the questions and send them with his Christmas card!

Festive jollity aside, such a dismissive response to perfectly valid questions is distinctly concerning.  Is the Conservative administration that arrogant that it simply decides whether it wants to answer questions or not, whatever the constitution says?  Where will the answer to the questions be recorded for the public record, if the questions are not answered when it should be?

Unlike the leader of the council, I’m happy to answer those questions.  The answers are: a) Yes, the Conservative administration is arrogant b) such arrogance is damaging to the democratic process if it means that the administration simply rides roughshod over the constitution.
