Tory privatisation plans – we need answers and we need them now

02.28.10 | Comment?

On 13 January I broke this news about the Tories secret plans to privatise massive parts of council service both at county and borough levels across Lancashire, culminating in the release of a contract notice, worth £1.9 billion over ten years, through the Official Journal of the European Union.

No councillors were told.  No unions were told.  It only came out because the contract was advertised in the specialist press.

The deadline for companies to submit their details for the contract expired one month ago, on 29 January 2010.

I know that senior officers have since been meeting behind closed doors to discuss next steps.

I do not know what they said.  Nor does anyone else apart perhaps from a few top Tories.  There is no sign of the matter in the borough council’s latest Key Decision Forward Plan which takes the council’s plans through to June 2010.

Why the secrecy about a matter which may have simply massive implications for the delivery of public services across Lancashire?

What are the Tories trying to hide?

We need answers and we need them now.
