The Tories and radioactive waste

03.03.10 | 2 Comments

Supported by Labour councillors, West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper’s campaigning against proposals for the expansion of the Whitemoss Landfill site on the edge of Skelmersdale to receive hazardous and radioactive waste.

That is why I’m encouraging people to go to online and sign the petition so that we can make our voices heard loud and clear: Don’t dump hazardous waste on our children and communities.

Here’s the Leader of the Tory council’s apoplectic response to this campaign, as reported by the local press:

Lancashire County Council responded by saying that it had already clarified that no radioactive waste is to be treated at the site, and said Ms Cooper’s comments were ‘amazingly irresponsible’.

“This is not true and I find it beyond belief that she would scare local people by telling them this.

And then there’s page 4 of Lancashire County Council’s consultation document on the proposals:

‘The Favoured Option’ describes our proposal of only allocating extra landfill capacity for radioactive and hazardous waste, at Springfields and Whitemoss respectively, and allowing inert waste landfill at mineral workings or in restoring landfill sites.

Rather than spending time on apoplexy, the Tory leader might be better off telling the truth, or at least getting briefed by officers.
