Bickerstaffe Thoughts, Cotterill on the Council, Planning applications

How to insult people Tory style

03.16.10 | Comment?

For planning committee the other night I submitted the following motion:

“That this council recognises the right of residents of Scarth Hill Lane, Bickerstaffe Ward, and their representatives in Bickerstaffe Parish Council, South Lathom Parish Council and South Lathom Residents’ Association, to full consultation and committee speaking rights in respect of any planning application made by Edge Hill University, Derby Ward where such a planning application applies to new developments beyond the current built environment and in the green belt area.

That this council considers its processes for consultation, with and speaking rights for, residents and their representative organisations where planning applications in one ward area have a potential impact on another.”

Nothing controversial in that, really.  Just doing my job as ward councillor, trying to ensure that the people in my ward get an equal say in what is an important planning matter for them.

I couldn’t propose it myself, as I’m not on the planning committee this year.  My colleague Bob Pendleton did it for me.  I couldn’t attend to hear the debate either, but as I couldn’t speak anyway that didn’t change anything.

I understand the motion was defeated by the Tory-dominated committee, because they felt the consultation process is adequate.

Well, I beg to differ.

A pointless insult to the people of Scarth Hill, courtesy of a Tory administration not interested in hearing what people think.
