A walk along the Tawd

02.14.11 | Comment?

On Saturday 23rd January, I took a walk with the dogs along the River Tawd, going north from the Skelmersdale Concourse area and out beneath the bridge under the ring road.

The Council describes such a walk thus:

Taking a walk in Tawd Valley Park can be a voyage of discovery in the midst of a bustling town, or simply a means to get away from it all and appreciate the countryside on your doorstep.

Well I certainly discovered a few things.

A couple of days later I met the senior officer at the council responsible for the management of open spaces like the Tawd, and these are the list of promises he gave by email on 26th January:

1) The Rangers have been carrying out extensive tree management works all this week at Tawd Valley and they have been able to do some litter picking whilst there.  We’ve also arranged for a specific litter pick to be carried out using our ‘New Deal’ clients and Street Scene staff tomorrow (with a ‘Spring Clean’ Campaign being scheduled for the end of March).

2) The Trolleys are being brought to the attention of ‘TrolleyWatch’ this afternoon with a request that they arrange removal. If they are unable or unwilling, then our Rangers will remove them asap.

3) The burnt-out car has been referred to the officer in Street Scene that deals with abandoned cars and she will arrange removal (both with her Contractor and our Rangers).

4) In relation to your query about the orange sludge, it is, as you anticipated, Iron Oxide and is part of the ‘washings’ coming out of the old coal mines in that area. Unfortunately we don’t have the ability to prevent it appearing, but what our Rangers do is try to ensure that its flow is diverted away from the main paths – but this will mean pools of rusty sludge will form in other parts of the park and which will be accessible, by kids, dogs, or whoever. However, I am assured that it isn’t poisonous or toxic in any way.

5) We’ll ask Cleansing to sort out the glass at the bandstand, our Play Area Safety Contractor to visit the (disused) Play Area and we’ll ask the Rangers to sort out the cobbles/pathways.

I went for a walk with the dogs along the Tawd again yesterday.  This time I took a cameraphone.  How do you think these promises have been met?

You’ll find out in the next series of posts.
