Bickerstaffe Thoughts, Breaking News

Sandbagging old ladies

06.27.08 | Comment?

For the second time in six months, the heavy rains in Bickerstaffe last night saw me out and about trying to unblock highways drains, diverting road run off into them with strategically placed bricks, and helping to sandbag old ladies, in the nicest possible way.

As far as I know at the moment, no-one actually got flooded out (unlike in January) as the rain started to ease by 8pmish and it was dry through the night, but it was a close thing.

Anyway, this morning saw me back onto the County Council about the need to sort out these localised issues of lack of drainage capacity on the roads (associated with strange road cambres which mean streams run across the roads and join up with others etc etc.).

I’ve already got a site meeting lined up with Lord Derby’s Estate manager about the problems of run off from his (tenant farmers’) fields, but I’ll be trying to tie it in with a meeting with the highways engineer to look at on overall solution.

While the problems don’t affect many houses – really just those with an unfortunate congruence of field, road and drain factors –  for those it does affect it’s very big matter indeed;  being flooded out is a horrible experience and has long lasting effects.

I’m determined that the responsible authorities – including the utilities companies – get their act together on it.
