Broadband – a step forward?

03.11.07 | Comment?

Following further complaints about BT’s performance in providing a decent broadband service for this area, we have been working with Rosie Cooper to raise the issue at the highest possible level in BT and with the Lancashire Digital Development Agency.

On the positive side, we have received a letter from the regulator OfCom, which states:

“There are limitations on access to DSL enabled exchanges when connected by non-copper wiring. We have been in contact with BT Openreach to establish the extent of this problem within this locality and what plans, if any, they have to find a solution. The OpenReach manager responsible has told us that additional investment is required to remedy this problem. The work is now planned for late Spring and so one would expect the problem of accessibility to be resolved soon after.?

While this sounds great, it does seem at odds with a letter from the BT Chief Executive, also received recently, who denies that non-copper wiring is a problem in the first place and so suggests NO work will take place:

“There are no current plans to replace the aluminum cables…In itself, aluminum is no deterrent to the provision of broadband.?

It may be that the BT Chief Executive’s view predates OfCom’s intervention, but either way we’ll get to the bottom of it, and won’t stop till we’ve got proper broadband access sorted
