Being Labour, The world beyond West Lancashire

The Labour party and ethical investment

07.23.08 | 1 Comment

Here’s the resolution I’ll be putting to my Labour party branch tonight:

“That this branch notes the action taken by Liverpool City Council, in cross-party co-operation, in respect of the potential for adding an ethical dimension to the Statement of Investment Principles of the Merseyside Pension Fund.

Further, that the branch notes the potential for the development within local government pension funds of ethical investment principles which ‘screen out’ unethical investments (e.g arms trading) but also create positive screening mechanisms with a view to. investment in companies which have a strong set of ethical principles and/or proof of ethically sound actions.

Finally, that this branch calls on the West Lancashire CLP and the West Lancashire Group of Councillors to promote as best they see fit the development .”

A bit wordy I know, but I reckon it’s important for the Labour party to get involved in this gorwing movement.  Thanks to Cllr Louise Baldock in Liverpool for her guidance on the wording of the Liverpool bit.

Anyone else want to do one?

If you’re new to this area, try this site for useful information on guidance, though it’s not that specific about pension funds.
