West Lancashire District Council ‘forgets’ £125,000 deal

09.25.08 | Comment?

After quite a bit of digging, I can confirm that West Lancashire District Council simply forgot about a £125, 000 ‘commuted sum’ agreement with developers, signed in 2000 when greenbelt land behind Firswood Road on the Skelmersdale/South Lathom border.  The agreement states that as soon as 35 acres of the greenbelt becomes built upon, the commuted sum agreement comes into effect, and the developers must pay £25,000 per year for five years towards a shuttle bus service between the site and Skelmersdale, so as to alleviate traffic congestion etc.   The site was occupied in 2003/4 first by ASDA and then COMET, and the agreement should then have been triggered.

Our Conservative Council forgot.  The developers didn’t remind them.

So for four or five years now there’s been on bus service which could have met the needs of local residents around the site as well as the site.

Because the Conservative Council is really quite rubbish.  I’ve insisted that it should now happen, and I’ll be working to ensure that the route established is convenient to residents on Vale Lane, Spa Lane and Firswood Road as far as possible.  I won’t let the Council forget.
