Summer 07 Bickerstaffe Record

Traveller and gypsy site – the facts

07.23.07 | Comment?

Readers may remember the Conservative scaremongering before the election, in which they suggested that the MP was planning a traveller site for Bickerstaffe.  It later transpired that Conservative election leaflets in Upholland said that she was planning it for Upholland!  Both areas just happened to be seats they regarded as ‘marginals’ (they lost in both).

We can confirm that there are currently no plans to set up a site anywhere in Bickerstaffe.   The Housing Act 2004 requires all local authorities to develop a ‘Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment’.  The Assessment was developed at a Lancashire-wide level, and was published on 02 July.  It indicates a ‘likely need’ in

West Lancashire for 14 residential pitches and 3 pitches for travelling showpeople.   No location within

West Lancashire is identified.   A group of officers within the District Council has been looking at the issue for some time now (the Conservatives of course knew this all along).  At Labour’s request, a councillor task group is also being set up to keep abreast of any developements   The executive summary of the assessment document can be seen, with the accompanying Council report of 18 July. at http://www.westlancsdc.gov.uk/Coins/index.cfm
