SERCO and sunbeds

07.25.07 | Comment?

I happened into Ormskirk pool today with my children things because they wanted to do a mix of swimming, diving and attacking daddy with floats.

I was a bit suprised to see loads of poster advertising sunbeds with a tagline close to the ‘Tanarific’ one that you see all over the place at hight street sunbed places.

Hold on I thought to myself.  Isn’t public health guidance really against the promotion of artificial tanning, given the risks of skin cancer.  And yet here is a company which receives a £1million per year public subsidy from West Lancashire Council, promoting away in a place where there’s lots of kids.  And isn’t the Council supposed to be working in partnership with health agencies to promote health, even if it has steadfastly refused to adopt health as a corporate priority?

So we went swimming and I got attacked with rubber floats, and then I came home and wrote to the public health people at the Primary Care Trust about it.  we’ll see what comes of that.
